Valley of the Dolls

Yesterday I spent an hour in one of the second hand bookshops in the coastal town where I am spending the weekend. After pouring over racks of books I ended up walking away with just one, the ultimate 1960s flash trash novel Valley of the Dolls by Jacqueline Susann. I remember reading this novel when I was 14 and being fascinated and thrilled with it. I imagine this time around it will be somewhat less sensational.

  1. Hello Maiden. I'm Mrs Cro. I've just returned to France from Oz. Sadly I wasn't in Melbourne, otherwise I would have visited. Love your blog. Lady Magnon.

  3. My older brother (8 years) took me to see the film when it first came out, thinking it was soft porn, so we walked out half way through. I think I have walked out of again since then.

Hello Lady Magnon! We haven't met since 40 years ago. You're looking a bit bluer than I remember you, but maybe that is Cro not being able to put down a brush?

  5. As far as I can remember, because it wasn't. Some years ago, a friend settled down to watch a hard-porn video, as his wife had gone away for the weekend. As the tape started, there were a load of shabby, unwashed women talking to each other, drinking cups of tea and smoking. So far, so good. They seemed to be in prison - even better. After about 15 minutes, nothing had happened, then some adverts came on. Somebody had recorded over the tape - it was 'Prisoner, Cell Block H'. True story.

  6. oh how hilarious and what a huge disappointment to your friend, as far as I remember there was nothing attractive nor pornographic about Cell Block H..

  7. I think he got more joy out of telling the story than he would have got watching porn Maiden. Usually (so I am told) the 'plots' to those films are even thinner than Cell Block H!
